Swansea City is delighted to have received a Football Association of Wales Academy Licence, which will allow the club to continue to improve the standard and competition of its girls’ teams and the development pathway for young players.

The Swans launched under-13s and under-15s’ teams following trials last summer and the granting of a licence, which is assessed across sporting and business criteria, means those squads will now have a competitive games programmes moving forward from the start of the 2025-26 season.

Further trials for these teams, as well as our under-17s, will be held this summer, and sign up details can be found below.

The club already fields a team in the under-17 South Wales Women’s and Girls’ League, while the under-19s play in the Adran Leagues.

With participation levels on the rise and significant strides being made on and off the field – including a number of Welsh top-flight teams, including the Swans, being semi-professional and Wales reaching a major tournament for the first time – the introduction of the licence model aims to ensure players are presented with an appropriate level of challenge as they develop.

Furthermore, Uefa now requires clubs to establish youth teams in order to qualify for European competition, while Fifa regulations require players to only be registered with one club at a time.

Chloe Bull, football operations and administrator for Swansea City Women, said: “We are delighted to have been granted an FAW Academy Licence, which provides us with the opportunity to strengthen our player development pathway.

“This will allow our teams to have a regular programme of competitive fixtures, and test themselves at the highest-possible standard, and allow us to further expand to the lower pre-academy age groups.

“As a club, the growing popularity and success of the Women’s game in Wales presents us with a significant chance to implement structures that can be of long-term benefit to our programme.”

Swansea City Women head coach Yzzy Taylor, added: “This news is a real boost for our junior girls’ programme, and I am sure all players and coaches are already eagerly-awaiting the start of the new season and the chance to make further strides.

“To be able to provide a high standard of games programme for our representative sides is a crucial part of player development, and hopefully will allow us to become increasingly self-sufficient as a club and raise standards.

“We want players within Swansea and south-west Wales to have access to the best-possible opportunities to play the game we all love, and this is an important step in the right direction.”
