Connor Roberts | To score for my country at a major tournament is the pinnacle

Swansea City’s Connor Roberts savoured arguably the finest moment of his career to date after his late goal helped Wales move to the brink of a place in the knockout stages of Euro 2020.

The Dragons beat Turkey 2-0 in Baku, moving to four points from two games after their opening Group A draw with Switzerland.

Rob Page’s side turned in an outstanding display against a Turkish side some had tipped as an outside bet to win the tournament.

Aaron Ramsey gave Wales a deserved lead before the interval and, while Gareth Bale missed a second-half penalty, Roberts rounded the win off by steering home the Real Madrid forward’s pass in stoppage time.

It was the defender’s second goal for his country, as he followed in the footsteps of Ashley Williams and Neil Taylor by scoring for Wales at a European finals while with the Swans.

And the 25-year-old could not hide his delight.

“To be playing for Wales at a major competition is the pinnacle for me to be honest, and to pop up and score is just unbelievable, incredible,” the Swans’ Supporters’ Player of the Year told BBC Sport.

“It's a big step towards going through but there's another massive game against Italy on Sunday.

“The plan was to win and try and play well and I think we've done that.

“We know what they (Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey) bring to the team so we just have to give them the ball and I think we did that well.”

Wales will complete their group stage fixtures when they take on Italy in Rome on Sunday at 5pm.
